”As If” on sarja muuttuvia esityksiä tai esille tuotuja kokeita, jossa tutkitaan mm. esiintyjän läsnäoloa, yleisösuhdetta sekä elävän esityksen ja videon suhdetta. Sarjan etenemisen myötä tutkimuksen painopisteet ja esityksen fokus vaihtelevat.

Kun aloitimme sarjan tekemisen, lähtökohtanamme oli ranskalaisen filosofin Roger-Pol Droit kirja Esineiden luonto, joka pohdiskelee filosofisesti ja kevyesti arkisten esineiden olemusta. Varsin pian prosessissamme kävi selväksi, että esineet eivät ole yhtä kiinnostavia kuin itse esitys-tapahtuma, ja päätimme keskittyä peruskysymyksiin: Mitä on esitys? Miten pienistä elementeistä esitys muodostuu? Missä on esityksen ja ei-esityksen raja? Mitä katsominen on? Ja vielä: millainen rooli videon käytöllä voi tässä esityksen peruskysymysten ja katsomisen aktin havainnollistamisessa olla?

Olemme tietoisesti hakeneet esityksellemme sarjan muotoa, jossa yksikään sarjan osa ei ole samanlainen. Olemme valinneet ja harjoitelleet joitakin performatiivisia elementtejä, joita varioidaan sovitusti kulloisenkin suunnitelman mukaan. Näitä elementtejä ovat olleet mm. istuminen, esiintyjän läsnäolo, Gene Vincentin laulu Be-Bob-A- Lola, esineiden toisintunnistaminen ja nukettaminen sekä videon käyttö.

Aikaisempia esityksellisiä kokeita:

# 1 - # 2; 29.5. ja 31.5 2006, TTK:n tila, Katajanokka, Helsinki. Ensimmäisissä versioissa havainnollistimme esityksen ja ei-esityksen rajapintoja. Pohdimme, mikä voisi olla esityksen ”pienin elementti”

# 3; 7.6. 2006, Riddarhyttan, Ruotsi. ”The story of work” - projektin työpajan yhteydessä esittämässämme versiossa leikimme avoimen alun ja avoimen lopun käsitteillä.

# 4; 15.8.2006, Amorph!06 – Kansainvälinen performanssitaiteen festivaali, Kuvataideakatemian galleria, Helsinki. Esitys keskittyi videon ja elävän esiintyjän suhteeseen. Esiintyjän lisäksi tilassa oli kaksi tv-monitoria, jotka näyttivät videotallenteita edellisistä esityksistä.

# 5; 23.9.2006, Labor Sonor, Berlin, Saksa. Fokuksessa oli performatiivisen toiminnan sanallinen kuvailu, ja sen myötä syntynyt valta-asetelma kuvailijan ja kuvailtavan välillä.

# 6; 27.9.2006, Esittäjä tekijänä, taitaja taiteilijan-seminaari, Sibelius Akatemia, Helsinki. Koe poissaolon läsnäolosta eli millaista näyttämöllistä todellisuutta syntyy, kun esiintyjä viittaa näkymättömään näyttämöllä.

# 7, 14.4.2007, ArtContact, Forumbox, Helsinki. Kokeilimme millaisia variaatioita esityksessä tapahtuu, kun jälkimmäinen esiintyjä toistaa edellisen toiminnat.

AS IF – THE OPEN SERIES

“As If” is a series of changing performances or displayed experiments where we study, for example, a performer’s presence, the relation between the performance and the audience or between the performance and the video. The emphasis of the experimental performances as well as their focus will vary as the series goes on.

When we began to carry out the series, we studied the book Dernières nouvelles des choses. Une expérience philosophique by a French philosopher Roger-Pol Droit. It considers some everyday objects’ nature in a philosophical and witty way. Quite soon we found out that the objects were not as interesting as a performative event itself and we decided to focus on basic questions: What is a performance? How small elements are able to create a performance? Where is the limit of the performance and the non-performance? What is watching? And some more: What kind of role can a video have in these acts which demonstrate the basics of the performance and watching?

In our process we have consciously looked for the form of a series where subsequent performances each differ from previous ones. We have chosen and rehearsed some performative elements which vary according to each performance plan in a fixed way. Some of these elements that have been used thus far are, for instance, sitting on the chair, the performer’s presence, Be-Bob-A- Lola –song by Gene Vincent, animating objects and recognizing them in a different way than usually as well as the usage of a video.

Previous experimental performances:

# 1 - # 2; 29.5. and 31.5 2006, RRC’s place, Helsinki, Finland. In the first two versions we demonstrated the limits of the performance and the non-performance. We considered which could be the smallest element of the performance.

# 3; 7.6. 2006, Riddarhyttan, Sweden. In connection with The Story of Work –project we played on the ideas of the open beginning and the open ending

# 4; 15.8.2006, Amorph!06 –The International Performance Festival, Helsinki, Finland. The performance focused on the relation between the video and the living performer. In addition to the performer there were two TV monitors that showed video films of the previous performances.

# 5; 23.9.2006, Labor Sonor, Berlin, Germany. In Labor Sonor we focused on the depiction of the performative event. We also demonstrated power relations between the describer and the target to be depicted.

# 6; 27.9.2006, Seminar in Sibelius Academy, Helsinki, Finland. This experiment concerned the presence of the absence: What kind of reality is sprung up when a performer refers to the invisible on the stage?

# 7 14.4.2007, ArtContact, Forumbox, Helsinki, Finland. We experimented with variations on two performers that tried at acting the same actions.
